ANSWERS TO SOME QUESTIONS
Frequent questions have been asked about our http://www.karatemakiwara.com makiwaras, so I will answer here: Question: Which makiwara is best for me? Spring wall mounted, earth mounted or floor mounted?
The wall mounted makiwara differs slightly as it has a solid yet forgiving feel. The floor mounted is tapered wood and also has deflection and resistance qualities. Both accomplish the same task of allowing the practitioner to get the feel of hitting something while working on proper body dynamics with resistance and some flexibility, making makiwara training useful and effective. I use both for training and sometimes prefer the wall mounted one over the floor mounted, but that is also based on how I feel at that moment. I also have an earth mounted makiwara in my back yard, which I enjoy. I hit the makiwara and settle into the "feeling" at first, allowing my mind and body to get into the training. The wall mounted makiwara's advantage is that it can be mounted indoors or on walls with ease. I suppose it is a personal choice. My feeling is that the makiwara itself is a great, essential and must have train tool for every martial artist. I cannot stress enough that this is a training tool and not something that will cause injury as injury eventually leads one to avoid pain and avoid the benefits of makiwara training. For dojo training the floor mounted makiwara or the earth mounted ones works great. It is also a great tool for class training by having a makiwara station with 3-5 makiwara set up as a group trains together in unison, which causes each practitioner to motivate each other as we all hit the makiwara together. I hope this helps answer some questions.
