Get to know your makiwara is very important and takes time. Strike it gently and feel the dropping and connection motions as you begin to utilize your entire body in the striking and kicking. As you begin to develop the habit of makiwara training, you should begin to feel your body settling into a rhythm of sorts and your mind body connection will become better and better. You will also become more accustomed and more familiar with your makiwara.

Begin with gentle and fluid movements paying special attention to the forces behind the strike, such as the foot, legs, torso, rotation, reaction hand, etc. The body is to work in unison and to flow together to develop strong yet precise techniques. Shoulders down, heaviness of movement using your body to drop as you propel the strike forward, this creating effective techniques. You can also utilize the makiwara to aid in your kata, kihons and kumite training. Transforming your art into a more effective art.
Makiwara training is also good for distance and target training.
Above all, have fun and enjoy your makiwara. Never injure yourself through reckless training. The pads are designed to absorb the strike and the boards are crafted to give the right amount of resistance and deflection in cooperation with each other.

Makiwara Guy, makiwara artist has trained in Shotokan Karate for over 35 years and first used a makiwara at Stan Schmidt's School of Karate in Johannesburg South Africa where Makwiara Guy started training in karate. Eventually Makwiara Guy was invited and a part of the early bird instructor training. Many years of training, study and passion for makiwara have produced makiwara's that Makiwara Guy produces in the Makiwara Shop. in Bradenton, Florida USA. Makiwara Guy has been a part of Rick Hotton Sensei's karate school in Sarasota, Florida since the mid 1980's and travels around the world with Rick Hotton Sensei teaching and encouraging.
